Yeşilçam - Turkish cinema (Yeşilçam) is an important part of Turkish culture. Yeşilçam literally meaning “green pine” is a metonym for the Turkish film industry, similar to Hollywood in the US. It is named after Yeşilçam Street in Istanbul where many actors, directors and studios were based.

Between the 1950’s and 1970’s Yeşilçam produced 250-350 films a year, making it a notable period for the industry.

In the 70’s Turkish cinema produced some of its most legendary stars such as Kemal Sunal, Kadir İnanır, Türkan Şoray and Şener Şen. Kadir İnanır, who features in one of our posters for ‘Yaz Bitti’, is a notable figure who often portrayed the tough, macho guy fighting against injustice. He has featured in many other Turkish films such as The Girl with the Red Scarf, Bitirim kardesler, The Return (1972) and more.

Increased production costs and difficulties in the import of raw materials brought about a decrease in the number of films made in the 1970s, in the early 90’s there were barely two or three movies released per year. Many of the former stars had moved to TV or were trying to rebuild the Yeşilçam’s former glory.

Some would say the resurgence of Yeşilçam didn't happen until the release of Vizontele in 2001, directed by Yılmaz Erdoğan who was already famous for his long-running sitcom and dedication to theatre. This movie had huge commercial success and once again brought attention to the industry. Since then, larger-budgeted films have been produced and the industry continues to grow inspired by young actors and directors looking for a new angle.
